Making the Decision to Downsize

When  you retire there are many lifestyle changes that you might make in order to adapt to retirement. One of the big things that many people will do is downsize. Downsizing is moving from your current home into something smaller, and for many people is a great way to improve their life once they are retired.

Everyone’s personal situation is different however, and it is important to weigh up the pros and cons of doing this before you go ahead and do it. This can also be a very emotional time, as you move from one life stage to another, so don’t feel pressure to make a decision as soon as you retire!

A reason that many people will downsize is for financial reasons. Not only do you not have to pay for the bills and the maintenance that comes with a larger property, but you also will gain financially from selling a larger property and buying something smaller, which will increase the funds that you have to enjoy retirement with – this could pen up things like holidays and an improved lifestyle for example.

Before you decide to go ahead and downsize, it is a good idea to talk it through with your partner, a financial advisor and other professionals who will be able to advise you on the various aspects of it. Remember this is about you and what you want, so don’t let people try to put you off or make you feel guilty for following your dreams!
