Plantlife’s No Mow May is an initiative which recommends gardeners allow the grass to go uncut for the month of May. This campaign is aimed at all gardens and green spaces, large and small.
Why is it recommended to have a break from cutting the lawn?
Bees and butterflies are vital for pollinating our plants, and yet we have drastically reduced the number of meadows over the last five decades. These meadows were once filled with wildflowers, which bees and butterflies would have used as their food source. Pollinators are under threat, directly as a result of modern farming practices.
According to the Wildlife Trusts, bees, butterflies and other pollinators are responsible for providing us with every third mouthful of food. Without them, there would be a great many fruits and other foods that we would not be able to grow. The No Mow May campaign is therefore an important reminder that we all need to do our bit if we want to continue enjoying our favourite foods.
Not mowing the lawn for a month not only saves you a few precious hours of hard labour but will also encourage wildflowers to grow amongst the long grass. In addition, it will benefit the planet by tackling the amount of pollution in the air. The longer grass can lock away carbon in the ground, protecting the environment.
The best bit about this campaign is that it doesn’t matter how small or large your plot is as every slightly wild patch of grass will make a difference. By coming together and all taking part in this, we can collectively make a huge difference.
Taking care of our lawnmower.
Whilst gardens are having a rest from being cut, now is an ideal opportunity to get your Mountfield spares and have your lawnmower repaired or serviced.
It is recommended that lawnmowers have any height adjustment levers oiled regularly and that the blades are cleaned and sharpened. For damaged blades, Mountfield spares, including new blades, will keep your lawnmower working reliably and give a better finish to your lawn.
